My Brilliant Life (translated by Chi-Young Kim, digital review courtesy of Forge Books) is narrated by the sixteen-year-old Areum, and the first chapters focus on his parents. This is a novel about a life less ordinary, and about making the most of what you’ve got, even when to outsiders it may seem that you’ve been dealt a very poor hand, indeed. I’ve been crossing my fingers for a long-form debut in English for quite some time now, and 2021 has finally seen it happen – and luckily, it doesn’t disappoint. Kim Ae-ran is a writer who’s been on my radar for quite a while now, thanks to the excellent short stories ‘Where Would You Like to Go?’ (translated by Jamie Chang, out in the ASIA Publishers K-Fiction series) and ‘The Future of Silence’ (in the collection of the same name, translated by Bruce and Ju-Chan Fulton). While the first of this week’s Korean literature selections probably won’t be on many people’s wishlist, the same certainly can’t be said for today’s choice.

There are three things you need to know about Elizabeth Finney: 1) She suffers from severe sarcastic syndrome, especially when she's unnerved, 2) No one unnerves her like Nico Manganiello, and 3) She knows how to knit.Įlizabeth Finney is almost always right about everything: the musical merits of boy bands are undervalued by society, “benefits” with human Ken dolls are better without friendship, and the sun has set on her once-in-a-lifetime chance for true love. I do have one of ther book she has narrated in (one of Clive Barker's), but oddly her list of titles is small. Gigi Shane did a wonderful job on the narration, and did male and female voices, and accents, fantastically. The one character though I did have trouble categorizing though was Kaitlyn (not sure of spelling) who I wouldn't categorize as either bad or good, more just a silly teen who would have made the entire situation better without her. But the book about a group of very good people fighting against really bad odds, both before and after the earthquake. The level of corruption and rampant crime was astounding and anger inducing. And gee, what a lot of bad people were in authority in that time. The earthquake is nearly a footnote to the novel (coming well over 2/3rds of the way into the book), and the book is more a historic crime and corruption novel set at the time of the earthquake. 1906 I actually was fortunate enough to get as a free review copy from audiobookblast, which was doubly fantastic. So when I see a new one I put it on my wishlist or buy it. I'm a huge disaster film and novel fan and as an audiobook fan, there just aren't enough natural disaster books around. And That is Beforeġ906 wasn't quite what I was expecting. "Set in Bath in the last years of the Regency, it has the authentic Heyer sparkle. Krasznahorkai is a visionary writer even the strangest developments in the story convince, and are beautifully integrated within the novel's dance-like structure. (.) (T)his is an obviously brilliant novel. László Krasznahorkai's scenes are designed to disorient and defamiliarise. (.) If this summary of the first half of the novel sounds baffling, it's a hell of a lot clearer than the book itself. It is brutal, relentless and so amazingly bleak that it's often quite funny.
